What is Batik?
Batik is the original heritage of Indonesia. The word batik itself comes from Javanese language, namely “amba”, meaning “writing (drawing)” and “titik” which means “point”. Therefore, the manufacturing process are related to the writing (drawing) points on a piece of fabric using “malam (kind of wax)” to prevent staining on some part of the fabrics. It could be said that the product which can be called as batik is only a piece of fabric which the patterns are made by drawing on fabric using the wax and stamp or canting as a tool. What about printing fabric? Is it also called as batik? No, the printed pattern on the fabric do not use wax as the media, and its manufacturing process is different.

Setiap batik yang berasal dari daerah yang berbeda pasti memiliki ke-khas-an masing-masing, tidak terkecuali dengan batik Madura. Yang membedakannya adalah warna khas batik serta motif yang ada. How to Distinguish Batik (Tulis and Cap) and Printed Fabric?
People used to be able to distinguish the kinds of batik easily, whether it is batik which is made by drawing on the fabric directly (batik tulis), batik which is made using the special stamp (batik cap), or the printed fabric which has the batik pattern. It is possibly caused by the technology used long time ago which has not been really good like todays’ quality perhaps. It was clear for them when they look at the inside of the fabric. The pattern of batik tulis and batik cap can be seen through to the back of the fabric, caused by the wax which is drawn twice or more on the fabric, or the wax which is drawn in both sides of the fabric such as batik gentongan (explained later). The process in producing batik here is different from what we call printed fabric.

How to Maintain Our Batik?
Maintaining your batik is not difficult. You just need to give a little attention just like when you maintain your silk.
1. Find out the kinds of your batik fabric, whether it is cotton, kaos, or silk (rare).
2. Separate your batik with other clothes (especially for the first and second washing process) because there will be a release of the coloring process residue. However, you do not have to be worried about it because your batik will be fine, it does not reduce your batik quality. It is a good news for you who have Madurese Batik especially batik from Bangkalan Regency, because your batik pattern will be brighter through this process.

What are the differences between madurese batik and others?
Every batik which come from different regions must have their own characteristics, Madurese Batik has its own characteristics too. The very clear difference between Madurese Batik and others can be seen in its color and pattern. What is Batik Gentongan?
Batik gentongan is one of the masterpieces of Batik Madura. This product can be produced only in Bangkalan Regency, Madura. Batik Gentongan is produced in months or years, depend on the pattern itself. The pattern is drawn using cantingon both sides. The coloring process also takes quite a long time. It is done in a special barrel (genthong in Javanese and Madurese), therefore it is called Batik Genthongan. Due to the long and complicated process, this type of batik has a higher price than others. However, for those who like and love batik must have this one, because Batik genthongan color is more durable and the pattern is more beautiful and neat.

‘Batik Sleman’
Batik tulis produksi Kabupaten Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta mulai menembus pasar internasional seperti di negara bekas Uni Soviet, Jepang, dan Amerika.
“Saya terus berupaya memperkenalkan ‘Batik Sleman’ di kancah internasional melalui sejumlah pameran, saat ini banyak negara yang mulai tertarik dengan ‘Batik Sleman’ ini,” kata Bambang Sumardiyono, pemilik Wisata Batik Nakula Sadewa di Sleman, Minggu, 3 Juni 2012.
Jika selama ini banyak di kenal batik Pekalongan, Yogyakarta maupun Solo, katanya, dirinya berupaya mempromosikan ‘Batik Sleman’ yang diproduksi di Sleman.
“Saya hanya berusaha memperkenalkan bahwa Sleman juga merupakan daerah produksi batik dan tidak kalah dengan batik dari daerah lain,” katanya.
Dia mengatakan, dalam setiap pameran yang digelar di sejumlah negara seperti Rusia, Latvia, Jepang, Jerman, dan Amerika ternyata apresiasi masyarakat terhadap ‘Batik Sleman’ sangat bagus.
“Berapapun batik yang saya bawa pasti ludes dibeli bahkan batik-batik yang digunakan untuk displai juga ikut dibeli setelah pameran usai,” katanya.
Bambang mengatakan, saat ini pemintaan batik di negara-negara tersebut cukup tinggi. Selama satu bulan minimal omzet mencapai Rp200 juta.
“Batik kimono yang dipasarkan di Jepang saja untuk satu unitnya bisa mencapai harga Rp75 juta,” katanya.
Ia mengatakan, untuk tetap mempertahankan pasar batik Sleman di dunia internasional, dirinya tetap berusaha menjaga kualitas terutama masalah pengunaan bahan pewarna alam.
“Mereka sangat menghargai penggunaan pewarna alami, sehingga kami tetap mengutamakan pewarna alam ini,” katanya.
“Memang kualitas warna lebih bagus dengan pewarna sintetis atau kimia, namun kami berusaha agar warna alami dapat sebagus pewarna sintetis,” katanya. (*/Bisnis)

Olimpiade London 2012
Untuk menjunjung tinggi budaya Indonesia di kancah internasional, kontingen Indonesia di ajang Olimpiade London 2012 berencana menggunakan batik sebagai seragam mereka saat defile Olimpiade London pada tanggal 17 Juli 2012 nanti. Hal tersebut dikatakan langsung oleh Ketua Kontingen Indonesia untuk Olimpiade 2012, Erick Thohir. Dimana untuk pembuatan seragam batik ini telah dialokasikan dana sekitar Rp 100 Juta.
“Per piecenya seharga Rp 1,5 sampai Rp 2 juta. Kami alokasikan dana sekitar Rp 100 juta untuk seragam defile ini,” Kata Thohrir sebagaimana dilansir Detik.com
Desainer Yani N. Soemali dipercaya untuk merancang desain seragam tersebut, Yani mengatakan bahwa seragam batik-batik buatannya itu terinspirasi dari tokoh Raden Ajeng Kartini.
“Batik-batik ini saya terilhami dari Raden Ajeng Kartini. Agat dapat menjadi inspirasi para atlet-atlet yang bertanding di sana untuk mendapatkan medali emas,” ujar Yani.
Sementara itu, Bambang Pamungkas dipercaya untuk membawa obor Olimpiade London 2012 sebagai salah satu perwakilan dari kalangan olahragawan.
